So has life changed much after you graduated?
Well I have, like a big document that says I graduated from a university (laughs). I’ve got like...no, not really. Life hasn’t changed much apart of the fact that I’ve graduated. I’ve got way more friends from different places around the world now. That’s about it really, it’s not like once you graduate - it’s a massive change in your life.
Is life hard at the moment?
Naaah I don’t think my life is hard at the moment, my life is chilled (laughs). Life is joyful, I think, generally, I always look at life relatively. It could be really bad, I could be in a war-torn place, not being able to do shit and have a really shit life. But I’m able to create and support myself to do the stuff that I love, put it out there, and, you know, fulfil that need to make shit happen in my life. I’m really happy with that.
So what have you learnt in uni?
I’ve learnt that you can’t build an empire by yourself. Collaboration is very important. It’s nice man, connecting with people from different places, especially cause the university I went to (University of the Arts London) is very multicultural; there’s people from Japan, China, Portugal, South America. So it’s great to connect and do things together.
What are the biggest things you’re doing at the moment?
Right now I’m putting together new pieces for Playset London, I signed them off with my manufacturer this week. I’ve got a collaboration coming up in a couple of months, that I can’t really talk about right now, but it’s going to be really interesting. Actually last night my feature film by Kapri tv came out, it looks pretty cool. So there are things running side by side. But a lot of it, because of the nature of the work, I can’t really say much about at the moment, which is a shame.
Would you say that people judge you more and it’s more difficult to get out there/get a job because you are a fresh grad?
I think if you want to get a job, it’s hard in general because, I don’t even know why...because there’s so many of us, really. But I think at the same time, being a graduate also does put you ahead of those who have no work experience or no education in the field of work that they want to pursue. But because there’s so many of you, it does put you on the same level with all other graduates, so it’s all about the way you stand out. You’ve just gotta do your own thing, keep doing things regardless of what’s happening, which is what I think I’m doing.
How would you explain that London is very competitive?
Like I said, there’s so many talented people from all over the world. The work that comes out of here is amazing. So if your work is not amazing, you have to strive to make it amazing. So that’s why it’s challenging.
Luck or talent?
You do need a little bit of talent but only to a certain level, after that it’s only luck.
Straight away or later on?
You know what it is, yeah, I’d say straight away even though later on is better because you’ve done so much and can now do things very efficiently. But straight away is also a good teacher.
What you know or who you know?
Oh, who you know.
What is more competitive? Fashion or advertising?
Fashion, man. I’ve done work experience and stuff like that at different places doing advertising, but I’m yet to do one in fashion. For me, fashion is more competitive.
What are the key personal traits to push yourself out there?
You're gonna have to kick the shyness out of your life. Because you might be good at something but if you're too shy to present it, someone's who's not as good as you are, but is ready to go out there and talk and present themselves to the world, will always be ahead of you. That's a shame because I see that happening a lot.
Also, being easy to collaborate with. I think getting on with people is a very important trait, because you have to work with people all the time, so you should embrace the idea of team work. I think I should add a third trait too, just to round it off. Three is a good number.
So the final one I’d say, is to avoid slacking. It’s not like if you do something that’s great, you can sit down, rest on your laurels and be like ‘Ok, that’s awesome, I’ve done something great here so I can chill now’. Always strive to do better, do it more efficiently, you know? Just make yourself better with every step.
What job you could not do by any means?
Ummm...I don’t know, man..I guess, ah, yeah, I couldn’t be an executionist. You know, the one who has to press the button for the electric chair or the one who has to pull the trigger. (Ok, I’m not even asking to explain why).
What are the things you’re looking for the most In the near future?
Definitely putting out full collections and acquiring retail accounts, that’s very important. Yeah, I think these two are the most important.
