SHANNON ROSE LANE
Artist and curator of The Old Baths, Hackney Wick, London www.shannonroselane.com @shannonroselane Hi Shannon! So tell us a bit about yourself. All the bits that you do want us to know about you. I'm 20 years old. Artist, trained in taxidermy. I am the curator for The Old Baths, Hackney Wick (Cre8), and I want create a new style of exhibiting artwork through relaxed, sensory exhibitions. What is in your drawings? My drawings contain my reactions as a young female to social pressures in the modern age. This may not at first be obvious, however a large proportion of my female – based works contain themes of anxiety and self – awareness. The biggest adventure you’ve ever had. Last September in Croatia at Unknown Festival. I went as a team alongside the Artist Lauren Baker, to set up artworks we prepared for the festival. We arrived a few days early, and spent a large proportion of our time in an abandoned hotel which had been converted into the artwork studio. I met a lot of inspirational people during the festival, including DJs, and Artists, I don't think any of the team were prepared for the crazy two weeks we had. If you could move countries, where would you go? Somewhere European and cultural, but that is still as fast – paced as London. I wouldn't want to put myself in a country that was too laid back as I like my life to be a bit manic. Where do you get your inspiration from? Is there anything that takes the inspiration away from you? When I began to create artwork as a career, I started to question what inspired me. I gave myself false labels that didn't really ring true and found myself at a dead end. I've now really stripped myself back to basics and I create work based on my reactions and opinions at that time. Giving myself that freedom to create anything in any style is what inspires me. The best advice anyone has given to you. “Don't overthink it, just do it.” My mum is very straight forward in her thinking and doesn't believe in worrying about anything too much. Life really is too short to worry, or be nervous. What song plays in your head right now? Still by Daughter. The best thing in your room is… Either a resin pig's snout I cast or my first attempt at taxidermy, I wasn't sure what to do with them. They're both now just sat on my windowsill and I find them quite funny. What are your main goals right now? I'm currently working towards an exhibition I am curating for Papyrus (Young Suicide Prevention) on the 7th May, there will be an artwork auction and events throughout the weekend, to raise money for the charity. My main goal is to raise awareness of mental health and rid of the stigma, since losing a talented friend. What job couldn’t you do by no means? A routine job, in an office, in a suit, on a computer all day. The worst party theme? Karaoke. Where are we going to meet in 5 years? A cafe in Paris. More SRL's works here |
